Mormon Tabernacle

This is a photo of the Tabernacle in back of the water fountain. So beautiful. Later that night we got to hear the Mormon Tabernacle Choir practice. Can anyone tell me how long this choir has been in existence and has anyone ever heard them sing...radio or tv? If not have Ms. Niehoff down load some of their music on Mr. Schueller's computer. Believe me it is not rap!

The 360 members of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir represent men and women from many different backgrounds and professions and range in age from 25 to 60. They reflect a medley of unique lives and experiences and are brought together by their love for singing and their faith. Their incomparable voices are the common chord that unites to form the choral group known all over the world as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

The Choir has appeared at 13 of the world's fairs and expositions, performed at the inaugurations of five U.S. presidents, and sung for numerous worldwide telecasts and special events.

Five of the Choir's recordings have achieved "gold record" and two have achieved "platinum record" status. The most popular was the Grammy-Award-winning 1959 release of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" with the Philadelphia Orchestra.

ou don't have to look long in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's loft to find people from almost every trade and profession. You'll come across secretaries, physicians, homemakers, teachers, nurses and salesmen, to name a few. All share a tremendous gift for music coupled with a love and a desire to share it with others. Choir members dedicate a substantial amount of their time to rehearsing, recording, touring and performing together—all without getting paid.

Before being accepted to the Choir, applicants undergo a rigorous six- month, three-phase audition process. Prospective choir members must be active members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; be recommended by the bishop of their local congregation; live within 100 miles of downtown Salt Lake City and be between the ages of 25 and 55.

The Choir accepts applications for new singers the first week of January and July every year.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir is a prestigious organization and every year many talented singers try out for a handful of openings. In January 2001, 170 singers applied and submitted sample tapes. Of those 170, 80 were invited to take the musical skills test and 35 were invited for an in-person audition. Finally, only 17 singers, 10 percent of the original applicants, were accepted into the Choir. And interest continues to mount. In January 2002, over 550 requests were received for membership into the Choir.
